In the Spotlight this week: "Junax : Thread by Thread"
Truce+, powered by TAPP’s fair-trade streaming, unveils Junax: Thread by Thread, a powerful documentary celebrating the resilience of Indigenous Mayan women weavers in Chiapas.
Junax, meaning “Together” in Tzeltal, redefines Indigenous storytelling through the lens of Mayan women’s empowerment. Directed by Ambra Reijnen and Rubi Tobias, it centres on Victoria, a young woman from a Mayan community in Chiapas, Mexico, where 97% of the population lives in poverty. Leading an all-female back-strap weaving collective, Victoria defies gender biases and economic hardship, creating a path for women to earn a living. Her niece, Arabelle, grows up in the shadow of this legacy, embodying the hope of future generations.
Filmed in San Juan Cancuc, JunaxThread by Thread premiered as the opening film at the 2021 DOQUMENTA Querétaro Film Festival. It follows Victoria, anthropologist Rubi Tobias, and advocate Ambra Reijnen, whose collaboration weaves a story of resilience. As Promono Multisensory Productions states, “Junax: Thread by Thread is a story of female legacy and empowerment,” highlighting how collective action combats institutional discrimination. The film’s intimate visuals and raw storytelling, supported by sound design from Adrian Simg and Andrés Monerris Gallart, immerse viewers in the textures of Mayan life.
